Solar Batteries Explained: How They Work and Are They Worth It?

In Part 1 of our Solar Simplified Series, we explained how a grid-connected solar system works and how solar panels help reduce your reliance on electricity from the grid.

However, one question naturally follows:

What happens to all that extra solar energy your system generates during the day?

This is where solar batteries come in.

Many homeowners are curious about battery storage, but they’re often unsure how batteries actually work or whether they’re worth the investment.

In Part 2 of our Solar Simplified Series, we’ll explain how solar batteries store energy, when they power your home, and whether a battery could be the right choice for your household.

What Is a Solar Battery?

A solar battery stores excess electricity generated by your solar panels.

During the day, your solar system often produces more electricity than your household needs. Rather than sending all that extra energy back to the electricity grid, a battery can store some of it for later use.

Then, when the sun goes down or your solar panels aren’t generating enough power, your home can draw electricity from the battery instead of purchasing it from the grid.

Simply put, a solar battery allows you to save your solar energy and use it when you need it most.

How Does a Solar Battery Work?

Let’s look at a simple example.

Imagine your solar system generates 30kWh of electricity on a sunny day.

Your household uses 10kWh during daylight hours and 15kWh overnight.

Without a battery:

  • Your home uses the 10kWh it needs during the day.
  • The remaining 20kWh is exported to the electricity grid.
  • You buy 15kWh from the grid to cover nighttime use.

With a battery:

  • Your home still uses the 10kWh it needs.
  • The battery stores some or all of the remaining 20kWh.
  • Later that evening, your home uses the stored energy from the battery.

As a result, you purchase less electricity from your retailer.

The more solar energy you use yourself, the less electricity you need to buy from the grid.

What Happens at Night?

This is where solar batteries really shine.

Solar panels stop generating electricity once the sun goes down. However, a charged battery can continue supplying electricity to your home throughout the evening.

For example, your battery may power:

  • Lighting
  • Refrigerators
  • Televisions
  • Computers
  • Kitchen appliances
  • Air conditioning systems

Once the battery runs low, your home automatically switches back to drawing electricity from the grid.

The entire process happens seamlessly, so you won’t notice any interruption to your power supply.

Can a Solar Battery Power My Home During a Blackout?

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about batteries.

Many people assume that every solar battery automatically provides backup power during a blackout.

However, that’s not always the case.

Some battery systems include backup power functionality, while others do not. Additionally, backup power capabilities can vary depending on the battery model and system design.

If blackout protection is important to you, it’s essential to discuss this with your solar installer before choosing a battery system.

At Coffs Solar Energy, we help homeowners understand exactly what backup options are available before installation.

What Are the Benefits of a Solar Battery?

There are several reasons homeowners choose to add battery storage to their solar system.

Use More of Your Own Solar Energy

Without a battery, much of your excess solar power may be exported to the grid.

With a battery, you can store that energy and use it later.

As a result, you become less reliant on electricity retailers.

Reduce Electricity Bills

By using more of your own stored solar energy, you can reduce the amount of electricity you purchase from the grid.

Over time, this can help lower your energy costs.

Greater Energy Independence

Many homeowners enjoy the peace of mind that comes from relying less on the grid.

A battery allows you to make better use of the renewable energy you’re already generating at home.

Your energy, your way  – that’s our motto. Its your energy and you can do with it whatever you want.

Potential Backup Power

Depending on the system you choose, a battery may provide backup power during outages.

This can be particularly valuable in areas where power interruptions occasionally occur.

Are Solar Batteries Worth It?

The answer depends on your individual circumstances.

For some households, batteries can deliver significant benefits. For others, a standard grid-connected solar system may offer better value.

A solar battery may be worth considering if:

  • You use a lot of electricity during the evening.
  • You want greater energy independence.
  • You want backup power capabilities.
  • You plan to stay in your home long term.
  • You want to maximise your use of solar energy.

On the other hand, if your primary goal is achieving the shortest possible payback period, a battery may not always be the most cost-effective option.

This is why personalised advice is so important.
